Hacienda Monterosa.

This rare example of colonial architecture is nested in a beautiful mountainous region of tropical forest and offers direct access to the refreshing river and the plantation paths which are within the Henri Pittier National Park. For rent over weekends and holidays, it is an extraordinary place for the more adventurous independent traveler looking for something different to the traditional posadas. Tour guide writer Elizabeth Kline thinks that "In Choroní, it is possible to visit extraordinary inland places, away from the crowds, that offer great attractions. One such place is the cocoa plantation Hacienda Monterosa" (El Universal, Guía Turística, June 2007) and Valentina Quintero confirms that "...it is a fine place for the enjoyment of a wonderful plantation with great history" (Todo en Domingo, 27 May 2007).

Hacienda Monterosa can house groups of up to nine guests in bedrooms with fans, bed linen, bathroom and river towels: 

2 double bedrooms with private bathrooms

Recommended Activities in Choroni...

• La Sabaneta is a traditional cocoa estate and is the only fully functioning plantation in the Valley of Choroní. Together with a local employee, you can take a walk through the working grounds of the hacienda to see the cocoa trees and imposing shade trees, as well as the irrigation systems dating from colonial times, giving you an understanding of the development of chocolate from the plant to the bar
• Peñero (fishing boat) trips to unspoilt beaches such as Uricao and Cepe or the historic town of Chuao (15 to 20 minutes from Puerto Colombia)
• A visit to the nearby colonial town of Choroní
